The second part amends the fiasco of the first one. Spectacular and, again, with several moments of the already classic "platform-like" fights on the run from these series of movies that could be enhanced if some sense would be given to them. Still, the staging of every location and, remarkably, Smaug, is worth seeing.

7 out of 10 stars would normally be considered quite okay and I guess you could say that this movie is quite okay. However, it has a reputation to live up to. As a movie in the Tolkien universe and with LOTR and The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey this movie have a lot to live up to and, as far as I am concerned, it does not. As an action/adventure/fantasy movie it is a quite okay movie. It has a lot of action of course, a lot of adventure and a lot of special effects. Of course everything plays out with the Tolkien universe as a back-drop. I guess it is rather superfluous to mention that the movie is based on the book The Hobbit by Tolkien. However it is here the problems start. In my review of The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey the first thing that I mentioned was that you should be aware of the fact that the movie did not follow the book in any great detail and that this was quite okay since the extensions were well made. Well, it should be no surprise that the first part of this statement is valid for this movie as well. Unfortunately, whereas the first movie felt like a fluid extension of the book this one feels like it is just full of fillers. There are a lot of cool scenes and a lot of action but it really feels like it was just put in there as fillers to showcase the special effects. Speaking of special effects, quite a few of them where rather unimpressive I have to say. The scenes where the dwarfs went down the rapids in barrels frequently looked plastic and artificial. The scenes with Smaug was not too bad even though he was quite overused but the parts around the forges was just plain ridiculous. I know it is fantasy but come one, getting them started and producing tons and tons of molten gold in a few minutes not to mention riding on molten metal without getting burned was just silly. On the whole I found it an enjoyable movie but I was expecting more.

Jackson turned a great story into just another Prates of the Caribbean. Jumping, sliding, gags, etc. All the thinking parts are gone.

I'm happy to be back in this world, but _Empire_ this ain't. _Final rating:★★★ - I liked it. Would personally recommend you give it a go._

If you've liked the other four Lord of the Rings/Hobbit films, you'll like this one, simple. I found it highly enjoyable and well-paced - not as meandering as 'The Fellowship of the Ring' or 'An Unexpected Journey'. It's not as good as 'The Two Towers', but does an good job of moving the story and characters forward. It also has a great score - every time you hear that motif, you think of Sauron and the ring's temptation - and plenty of great visuals. It's pretty amazing how just watching a film can make you feel comfortable, as you recognize parts of Middle Earth/New Zealand. But most of all, it's fun - there's a bear, plenty of 'catch-me-if-you-can', a waterfall/rapids chase, some spelunking, some gold mining - oh, and a dragon! It's good to see Legolas and some Elves, as well as men, helping out the Hobbit & the Dwarves. Gandalf has some good moments, but this is definitely Bilbo's film - and it's left on a nice cliff-hanger.

After a lot of character building and exposition, it is time to meet some of the antagonists. The orc's obsession with the dwarfs is now explained as a part of an elaborate evil plan, we finally meet the dragon, which is an intelligent and articulate being, only driven mad by pride and greed. I quite liked the dragon and I wish the character would have been explored more. However, considering this is based on a children's book, any kind of depth in the story is a bonus. We also meet the humans, not some great kingdom, but a mere fisherman's village, far removed from the glory of the original Dale, and run by a corrupt ruler. Sauron makes his appearance, battling all kinds of magic users that seem to appear and disappear from various places as the story demands. We meet the "not so good" elf lord with a grudge on the dwarfs, as well. Here things start to also go awry with the quality of the storytelling, but the special effects and the increase in tension keep the viewer entertained. It all starts to go more and more over the top, without any reason to. If you are a Tolkien purist or thrive on a believable plot with reasonable characters and events, here is where you will start to scratch your head and wonder where it all went wrong. Still good and fun, though.

@Saelos-M your so full of shit, the only letter you could get would be from your internet connection provider...so stop spreading false rumors around... by the way I've been downloading from PB since it's first week on the net and I now have 110 terabytes of files on external drives without any letters, e-mails or any type of warning EVER!

Hi all, I got a warning from my ISP about this. i've never had any issues with the YIFY team but watch out for this one.

By the way, does anyone know what are the ramifications of getting a letter from your ISP about copyrighted stuff? Is it just hot air or can/will they do anything?

By the way, I'm also in Canada; so I wonder if this is Canada-specific???

@nbsynbsy In 2006 the Supreme court of Canada decided againts the Music industry in a case of file sharing but last february (2014) they ordered ISP Tecksavvy to supply the list of customers that are suspected of downloading movies illegaly but with many restriction . They also state that no Court has yet made a determination that such Subscriber has infringed or is liable in any way for payment of damages. @gameraby: YIFY doesn't do 5.1 sound, just stereo, to keep the filesize down. Some of us cavemen who still watch on stereo appreciate that.

To all those from Canada worried about the letters from their ISPs, know the facts.

Every letter quotes the DMCA for penalties. The DMCA is an America law and HAS NO STANDING ANYWHERE ELSE. As a Canadian citizen using a Canadian service (internet) in Canada it means NOTHING.

I do know they passed Notice and Notice laws. What that does is require ISPs to forward their (MPAA/RIAA) letters to the customers. That's it. The letters always include inaccuracies and out right lies about the penalties.

First of all companies require a court order to force ISPs to turn over your information. That is almost impossible to obtain. Secondly they must prove that you are the actual person that did infringe to file suit. Just an IP address is not enough. Multiple people in the house or the possibility of someone hacking your wifi is enough to cause doubt.

At the very worst, if all the stars align against you, there is a cap on any damages of $5000. That's the total for everything. Not per infringement like in the US. So it could be 1 movie or 1,000,000 movies.

But please remember how unlikely that actually is. It's almost impossible to get the first court order and to my knowledge has never been successful to date.

Know the facts and don't get bullied or scared by US companies.

A large proportion of the film is over-taken with elf-orc fight scenes: two elves that aren't even in the book manage to heroically slaughter hundreds of orcs in scenes that aren't in the book. The ridiculous 'not in the book' love interest between the female not-in-book elf and dwarf culminates in her healing him from a wound that didn't happen in the book, which separates him from the others (again, not in book) using magical powers that it is really unlikely she would have even if she did exist as only a tiny number of elves have that power. Then at the end, in more 'not from the book' drama, it would seem that hiding behind a sliver of stone will shield people completely from nearby dragon-fire. DRAGON FIRE which apparently doesn't get you if you turn the corner or jump off the cliff in the nick of time. This lies at the heart of what is wrong with this film, it is trying to turn the Hobbit into an action movie complete with totally unbelievable escapes from danger. This is (theoretically) based on a children's book, it should be more Narnia and less LOTR. Just because they are in the same world should not make this a prequel to LOTR.Also, all of this inserted stuff really grates and is mostly boring as it has no substance. I don't believe films have to slavishly follow the book but any changes should be justified and these most definitely are not. Finally, the new bits are given precedence over the actual story and original content. How can they turn a single book into three films and yet cut-down or skip or rush through loads of really good bits from the book? How can they expand the fake characters at length and yet the real characters are barely used? Only a couple of the dwarfs are even distinguishable from each other. No real attempt has been made to dramatise or flesh out the Hobbit book at all. This is a completely different film. And not even a good one.
