The Exorcist III (1990)

  • Thriller Horror Mystery
  • Set fifteen years after the original film, The Exorcist III centers around the philosophical Lieutenant William F. Kinderman who is investigating a baffling series of murders around Georgetown that all contain the hallmarks of The Gemini, a deceased serial killer. It eventually leads him to a catatonic patient in a psychiatric hospital who has recently started to speak, claiming he is the The Gemini and detailing the murders, but bears a striking resemblance to Father Damien Karras.

Lt. Kinderman and Father Dyer cheer each other up on the anniversary of the death of their mutual friend, Father Damien Karras, by going to see "It's a Wonderful Life" at the local theater in Georgetown, near Washington D.C. But there's no cheering Kinderman while a particularly cruel and gruesome serial killer is at large. His murders, which involve torture, decapitation and the desecration of religious icons, is bad enough; but they also resemble those of the Gemini Killer, who has been dead for fifteen years.

Very good sequel retains the high standard Blatty's original screenplay set! In going through the original 'Exorcist' trilogy (I have the DVD 6-pack, with the two versions of the remarkable original, as well as the two recent prequels, so far unwatched), I was intrigued of seeing Oscar-winning writer William Peter Blatty's second stint behind the camera (for the record, I adored his 'The Ninth Configuration', done a decade prior), especially for the franchise that became his bread-and-butter (though I loved two films he earlier had co-wrote: 'A Shot in the Dark' and 'The Omega Man'). He once again does quite a credible job--both with the writing and in helming the picture. To me, it didn't matter much that Linda Blair wasn't involved--I like how it became a search for an already-dead serial killer--and I have been a great fan of George C. Scott in genre films since the likes of 'Dr. Strangelove' and 'The Changeling'. The scares and shocks were genuine, and the suspense and interest were there. It made me wish that even more sequels had been made, it was THAT good.

One might imagine that, after the debacle that was The Exorcist II, the franchise would have returned to the head-spinning and vomit spewing of the original, but to writer/director William Peter Blatty's credit, he tries something a little different with The Exorcist III, his film's serial killer plotline more akin to The Silence of the Lambs for much of the time. The nearest the film comes to William Friedkin's 1973 classic is with the brief special effects laden exorcism scene in the final act, which was forced upon Blatty by the film's producers. The majority of the film sees George C. Scott's cop Kinderman investigating several gruesome murders that mimic the modus operandi of The Gemini Killer, who was executed in the electric chair fifteen years earlier. Kinderman's enquiries lead him to cell eleven of a secure hospital ward where a patient who resembles dead priest Father Damien Karras claims that he is the Gemini Killer, having possessed Karras's body as he died.Sadly, as original as the majority of this film is, it also proves frustratingly dull for much of the time, with a glut of exposition heavy dialogue, an extremely slow pace, and only one decent scare (the much lauded hospital hallway scene) to keep the viewer from nodding off. As out-of-place as the studio sanctioned exorcism undeniably is, at least it's entertaining, which is more than I can say about George C. Scott's character complaining about a carp in his bath.

I was really looking forward to watching this movie in October, I have been wanting to watch this movie for a long time and now that I did, I must say that I loved it.The first Exorcist was a fantastic film, one of the best ever made, incredibly effective and absorbing. The second Exorcist film I found to be underrated, but I must admit that not everyone can enjoy such a deranged trip, it moved away from the calmed but frightening atmosphere from the original and became an insane dream. This third entry in the series goes back to its routes, the tone is much closer to the original and the movie's imagery becomes disturbing again. An interesting idea to make the third film a psychological thriller rather than an outright horror movie like the original, but it works. George C. Scott is amazing in this, such a great actor, Brad Dourif also delivers a really good performance, the man knows how to pay demented characters. The cinematography its amazing, not as breathtaking as the second one, but still great, this one doesn't bombard you with great visuals, it uses them when it needs to.As expected, this is a depressing experience, a magnificent movie, I love the filmmaking in it, the themes, the music, the characters, the visuals, the writing, an outstanding film.

This movie gives off another meaning of being possessed, where a mental patient is possessed by the evil spirit of a serial killer. He mysteriously beings a reign of terror, and a police lieutenant tries desperately to solve the murders and crack the mystery. This is quite a good piece of horror cinema with a lot of tension and thrills, from the doom and gloom atmosphere surrounding the downtrodden, murders, and rage to the demon action. The latter, though, was limited throughout the movie. Much of the film is about solving the crimes, in a gloomy-type atmosphere that makes this movie look like a film-noir type setting. There's some good and intense acting and some devilish frightening scenes, including the "creature-in-the-white-robe" scene. Not a bad horror sequel overall.Grade B
